The 100th Day of School! 2013

Yesterday, we celebrated the 100th day of school in Kindergarten and the 1st and 2nd grade classes. We of course have been counting down the days since the first day of school. It is a great math lesson, “How many days have we been in school?” “How many days are left till the 100th day of school?”. I also added a new pocket chart this year to our calendar time that I really like. It has a space for the Hundred’s, Ten’s and Ones. We add a straw each day to the one’s pocket then when we reach 10 straws, we put a rubber band around them and move them to the “ten’s place pocket”. We have learned to count by tens really easy that way. Yesterday was a big day at calendar time. We got to turn over the number 100 on our 100’s pocket chart, AND we got to move 100 straws to the “hundred’s place pocket”.

I made a sign for our door that said “We’re 100 Days Smarter” for them to walk under when they came in. They loved it! I let them go in and out a few times because it was so fun to walk through the streamers! Smile

After morning meeting, the 1st and 2nd graders came to our room.

We did 100 Exercises together.

We were hoping this would wear them out a little-they were all soooo excited! (But I think it wound them up more! ha!)

We also sang a few 100 Day songs and chants and cheers together!

Then we split the kids into two groups and did a couple of crafts- 100th Day Crowns and “How I Will Look at 100” pictures.

Then we all got together and made a 100 Day Snack. The kids had all brought in one item for us to count 100 of and put in a big bowl to mix together. We had goldfish crackers, Cocoa Puffs, Trix, and Cherrios cereals, pretzels, marshmallows, Teddy Grahams, cheese puffs, M & M’s, chocolate, vanilla, and butterscotch chips, and popcorn. It was quite the interesting mix! Smile We counted by 5’s and 10’s for each item.

“Yay! It’s finally ready! We’re starving!”

Next we had a “Show and Tell” time in the hallway. Each of the kids had made a “100 Day Poster” and they were displayed for everyone to see. We let the kids each tell us about his or her poster.

It was very difficult to take a good picture of their posters with the hall being narrow.

Then the final event was to stomp 100 balloons! We had asked all of the kids to bring in 5 balloons each and Mrs. Green and I added a few to the mix to make 100. Thank goodness the school owns a pump! Mrs. Green blew up about 75 balloons in no time at all!
